Help halt Megan’s MS – lifesaving HSCT funds required
Megan Rundback is a wife and mother and she lives with her husband Jonas, and their 3 daughters Tea (17), Sofia (12) and Meja (10) in the Illawarra region south of Sydney. She is also my youngest sister . . .
Megan has a life-threatening illness and needs your help to get to Russia for treatment that can save her life.
Health Matters . . . . Living with Multiple Sclerosis
Megan has had more than her fair share of health battles.
Megan’s MS symptoms are varied, but have included blurred vision, fainting, loss of use of arms and legs to name a few.
Her biggest battle is ahead and she needs to undergo lifesaving treatment in Russia in June 2016 and needs as much support as possible to get her there!
Treatments
Megan has had severe complications from treatment options available in Australia. She has also contracted a virus called John Cunningham Virus (JCV) which activates when your immune system is suppressed (like in MS treatment). Once JCV levels are high, at any time it could turn into Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML). PML destroys the white matter in the brain and is universally fatal in a short time. Megan’s JCV levels are already so high that doctors have stopped testing them. Due to the JCV and medication side effects (far too much suppression of the immune system) Megan cannot have further immune suppression treatments. This means there are no treatment options to slow her MS.
Haematopoeitic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) cost US$45K + flights
Many countries offer Haematopoeitic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) for MS, but Australia does not – yet. HSCT is in trial phase in Australia, but unfortunately Megan does not qualify for the trials and it won’t be available here soon enough to stop the rapid progression of her disease.
HSCT works by taking and storing stem cells, blasting the body with chemo to kill off the immune system, before re infusing the stem cells & building a new immune system, free from the memory of MS.
Booked in for HSCT in Russia
So…Russia offers self-funded HSCT and is a world-leader in this treatment. Megan is booked to go in June 2016 and needs help to raise funds to pay for this treatment.
Please share this story to help Megan get the treatment she needs and any donations are very much appreciated!
